Looking more carefully
Buildings become easier to understand when viewed slowly. A facade has a different rhythm from across a square than it does at the entrance. We follow the relationship between a building and its neighbours, looking for useful details rather than isolated monuments.
Our walks begin with a small area and no checklist. Returning at another hour reveals how shadows, shopfronts and people change the same composition. A modest camera and a few written observations are enough to keep a record.
What to keep in a notebook
Good public space offers places to pause as well as routes to follow. Steps, benches, sheltered corners and carefully placed trees contribute as much to everyday life as a dramatic skyline.
